itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p>The Eastern end of Tierra del Fuego is known as Pen\u00ednsula Mitre. This land is home to guanacos, foxes, native geese and a wide variety of animals on the shores, including sea lions and cormorants.<\/p>\n<p>The Southern area lies on the Beagle Channel, whereas the Northern shores are washed by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. This is a true Treasure of Nature that has been declared a \u201cRestricted circulation area\u201d in order to help preserve it.<\/p>\n<p>This is a land full of stories and legends; hundreds of shipwrecks occurred in the waters nearby. There are still plenty of vestiges scattered on these beaches from vessels that attempted to reach the other Ocean. The remains of the Duchess of Albany that rest on a sandy shore (a steel sailboat wrecked by the late 19th century), bear testimony to that. You can also visit the remains of buildings of the Factor\u00eda de Lobos (a sea lions slaughterhouse) at Thetis Bay; the ruins of what once was Estancia Policarpo at Caleta Falsa (formerly Sheep Farming) and other ruins of constructions made by pioneers.<\/p>\n<p>At present, Estancia Policarpo is mainly devoted to cattle raising. Their facilities are reduced to two operating stations: La Chaira and R\u00edo Bueno, where only a total of four people live.<\/p>\n<p>It is estimated that there is a population of approximately 4,000 livestock in the area, both tamed and wild. Basic knowledge of horse riding and a good fitness level are required.<\/p>\n<p>The difficulties that we may face during the expedition are those inherent to the terrain features of Tierra del Fuego (peat bogs, soft muddy spots, stocky forest, steep climbs and slopes on the capes, and four important rivers that must be waded through).<\/p>\n<p>The start and end of each day\u2019s journey will be subject to the tidal times (low tide, high tide), as a great portion of the ride will be on the beaches-the best ground to ride on.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #d6b319; font-size: 20px;\">SAFETY:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>At La Chaira station we have the base VHF frequency-radio equipment, directly communicated with the Direcci\u00f3n Provincial de Defensa Civil (Emergency Headquarters) and their emergency system.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #d6b319; font-size: 20px;\">HORSES:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The saddle horses we\u2019ll be using are criollos bred in Tierra del Fuego, of average 1.55 m (5 ft) height and absolutely docile and reliable. These horses are totally adapted to the weather and terrain of Tierra del Fuego, and have strong, resistant feet and hooves.
